Biofabrication for Tissue Science and Engineering

Categories: Materials Science and Engineering (MSE)
Speaker: Wei Sun, Drexel University
Date & Time: October 13, 2009 - 12:10pm
Location: CCR 201

Biofabrication uses cells, biomaterials, and/or biologics as building blocks to manufacture advanced biological models, systems, devices and therapeutic or non-therapeutic medical products. For millions of years, cells have been thought of as Nature's building blocks that make us what we are. "Let the cell do the work" generally guides the laboratory oriented biological study. In the new paradigm of Biofabrication, however, one can apply various physical, chemical, biological, and engineering processes to build novel biological models with a broad range of applications in tissue science and engineering, disease pathogeneses study, drug discovery and test, biochips and biosensors, and emerging cell and organ printing. This presentation will review some salient advances in the filed of Biofabrication, the enabling engineering and technology based biofabrication techniques and processes, and applications in tissue science and engineering. Overview of our group's work on Biofabrication and examples of design and manufacturing of tissue scaffolds, cell constructs, and bioprinting of living cells as tissue model for drug metabolism studies will be given. A personal view on the challenges and opportunities in the interdisciplinary field of Biofabrication and trend of tissue engineering will also be shared.

Wei Sun, (Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, 1992, Drexel University), is an Albert Soffa Chair Professor at Drexel University. His research interests include Biomanufacturing, Computer-Aided Tissue Engineering, Bioengineering, CAD/CAM, and Solid Freeform Fabrication. His research has been supported by NSF, DARPA, NASA, NIST, ARL, and the private sectors. He has published over 200 technical articles and conducted over 120 invited national and international presentations.
Dr. Sun is currently serving on Editor-in-Chief for international journal of Biofabrication (publishing by Institute of Physics - IOP), Founding Chair of Biomanufacturing Technical Committee in Manufacturing Engineering Division, American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME), Section Editor for Tissue Engineering for Journal of American Society for Artificial Internal Organs (ASAIO, 2002-2008), and Member of Editorial Board for other technical journals. Dr. Sun received 2008 College of Engineering Outstanding Research Award from Drexel University, the Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award from the International Society for Automotive Engineers in 2003, the Professor of the Year Award in 2002 and the Outstanding Contribution to Graduate Teaching Award in 2004, Drexel University.
