This colloquium describes an odyssey that begins with new synthetic methods for diazirine precursors of reactive intermediates, continues through the generation of the extraordinary CN2O molecule, diazirinone, and concludes with studies of the spectroscopy and kinetics of the iconic dichlorocarbene.
