Dr. Tuğrul Özel has been Associate Professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering since 2008 and the Director of Manufacturing Automation Research Laboratory at Rutgers University since 2002. He received a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Ohio State University in 1998 and holds a B.S. degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Istanbul Technical University and a M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Dokuz Eylul University . Dr. Özel previously worked as Research Associate at NSF funded Engineering Research Center for Net Shape Manufacturing and Assistant Professor of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at Cleveland State University. He was a summer faculty fellow at NASA Glenn Research Center in 1999.

Dr. Özel has published over 75 research articles in leading manufacturing research journals such as International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture, CIRP Annals, Journal of Materials Processing Technology, ASME Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering, Materials and Manufacturing Processes, and Transactions of North American Manufacturing Research Institute and peer-reviewed conference proceedings. He is the co-author of two books “Intelligent Machining: Modeling and Optimization of the Machining Processes and Systems”, ISTE-Wiley, 2009 and "Micro-Manufacturing: Design and Manufacturing of Micro-Products", upcoming, Wiley, 2010. He is the Founding Editor and Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Mechatronics and Manufacturing Systems as well as member of the editorial board of several international journals. His research has been well funded by National Science Foundation, NASA/NJ Space Consortium, Rutgers Research Council and industry. He is senior member of SME, ASME, NAMRI, and associate member of CIRP . He is repeatedly listed in The Marquis Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders. His articles published in the Int. J. of Machine Tools and Manufacture have been ranked #1 and #3 on the Top10 Cited articles in the past five years (2005-2009).
